Children are wonderful subjects for portrait photographs. They are filled with energy, positivity and innocence. They offer a sea of opportunities to capture real and authentic emotions. However, things may not exactly pan out the way we want them to, when photographing children. They may throw a tantrum, become cranky or feel uncomfortable to pose in front of a camera. Here are a few strategies to get children to pose and create magic on screen.
1. Break the ice
It is extremely important to ensure that children are at ease before you commence with the shoot. Greet them sweetly and play with them for sometime until they get comfortable around you. Be very patient while instructing them and adapt to their behaviour to get the best results.

2. Give them their favourite toy
Children feel comfortable and secure when they have their favourite toys with them. Not only is it a good ice breaker, but also a great way to capture their emotions. You are also freezing a memory with their favourite toy for them to reminisce in the future. Start the shoot with their favourite toy to make them comfortable and excited.

3. Use interesting props
If you are photographing toddlers, use colourful props to grab their attention. For instance, kids love bubbles and balloons. Using them will add some colour and character to your images. You can also get them to perform simple activities such as picking flowers or splashing water. Capturing their interaction with the props make for beautiful photographs.

4. Let them play
Children love to play games and it is a great way for them to open up. If you are photographing toddlers, give them a colourful ball and let them play with it. If you are capturing older children, make them play games such as hide and seek or hopscotch. Make them do a cartwheel or jump in puddles. Engage them in fun games to get enthusiastic and energetic smiles.
